This is a true widescreen (16:9) picture The difference between a widescreen and normal TV picture.
  The blue outline is the area of a standard 4:3 picture.
   
This is how a widescreen picture is displayed on a normal
(ie non-w/s) TV with the STB set to "4:3 Widescreen"
When you watch a programme broadcast in 4:3 your STB set to "4:3 Widescreen", this is the result. Well, approimately!
as outlined below.  
This is how a widescreen picture is displayed on a
normal (ie non-w/s) TV received through an aerial.
This is called "14:9 Letterbox" and is the compromise
between a normal (4:3) and a widescreen (16:9) picture.

How to change your STB to display a widescreen picture
   
If you have a normal TV:

With a standard TV we recommend that you select "4:3 letterbox" on your cable set top box.

To do this with your remote control you need to do the following:

1. Press TV Guide on your remote
2. Press the yellow button on your remote
3. Select the 'Settings' option
4. Select 'Set widescreen format' option
5. Select '4:3 letterbox' option
If you have a widescreen TV:
